You can divide perennials that don’t have a woody stem. Hostas are a great way to start! Dig the soil in around the edges of the plant to loosen the roots from the soil, then you can use your hands often on a hosta to grab a 4 to 6 inch chunk of the roots. Now you have a free plant! You can, of course take larger chunks if you want to, and you can also take a shovel and drive it down a section of the plant to divide the roots from the edge. Hostas are tough! You can divide them any time the ground isn’t frozen but what kind of maintenance do they require? If you don’t like looking at the dead flower stem when it’s done blooming then just cut that back but other than that I leave mine alone until spring and usually don’t touch them at all. It depends on where they are. (I sometimes remove dead leaves in prominent places but otherwise I don’t bother. To keep it low maintenance I just chuck the stems around the plants. They are hidden
