Mengo 1932: Uganda’s native King extols British rule. The Kabaka of Buganda Daudi Chwa spoke in English. He ascended to the throne in August 1897 following the deposition of his father Kabaka Mwanga by British Forces. At the time of his coronation, he was only one year old. 19 November, 1951: Kabaka of Buganda (King) Edward Mutesa inspects his troops on his birthday then walks towards parliament buildings. In 1962 Sir. Edward Mutesa became the first President of newly independent Uganda. He was deposed in 1966 when the Prime Minister Milton Obote promoted himself to the Presidency and ordered an attack on the Kabaka's palace at Mengo. The Kabaka escaped over the palace wall during a downpour and went into exile in England. He died in 1969 shortly after his birthday

Edward Mutesa II was proclaimed Kabaka at the age of fifteen upon the death of his father, Kabaka Daudi Chwa on 22 November 1939 and was installed outside the Lubiri at Mengo on 26 November 1939. He reigned under a Council of Regents until he came of age and assumed full powers. Mutesa was crowned at Buddo on 19 November 1942, his eighteenth birthday.
