Let me explain... 👇 1) Waiting and watching isn't always the right move. That ‘harmless lump’ may not be benign. When we wait too long to aspirate, it costs the pet's time and options. 2) You don’t need to feel guilty for not pursuing every treatment option. Guilt should not drive decision-making. Only informed, compassionate choices should. 3) We unfortunately don’t talk enough about quality of life until we’re already losing it. This is a reminder that QOL conversations should

The BEST thing you can do for your pet when it comes to cancer is to catch it in its early stages. 🙌🏻 So that’s why I created the SEE SOMETHING DO SOMETHING, WHY WAIT ASPIRATE® program. Let's break it down ↓ If you find a bump on your pet that is the size of a pea or larger and has been there a month, you should make an appointment with your primary veterinarian to have it aspirated ASAP. 📢 If you find anything suspicious, make sure to download my free body maps (link in bio) to mark

It Sounds Crazy Because It WAS! Before... ↓ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ... Stelfonta became available for veterinarians to use. Stelfonta is an MCT FDA-approved removal drug/treatment with a single injection. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ * 75% of dogs had a complete response with a single injection. * 87% of tumors resolved with 1 or 2 treatments combined. * 89% of dogs in the initial study had no tumor reoccurrence at 12 months. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ STELFONTA’s active compound, tigilanol tiglate, was discovered in the Australian rainforest

Cancer sucks! But it’s even worse when the patient is only 7 months old. Meet puppy Olive. She has a grade 2/high grade mast cell tumor on her muzzle. Clean margins would be challenging based on the size and location. So I’m making sure there is metastasis with lymph node aspirates, ultrasound and she needs a splenic aspirate too. And then the plan is to treat her with intratumoral Stelfonta and then follow up with chemotherapy. Stay tuned for updates (and follow me IG stories for more). She is

I've just come to the conclusion that it all comes down to discipline, priorities, and boundaries. We can't do it all, all the time, but there are seasons and opportunities that we can make sweeter by tuning into and prioritizing what WE really need. This is a reminder that life is not what happens to us but how we react to it and what we make of it, and know you're always just a few decisions away from creating true happiness for yourself. How do we give chemo to our dog and cat patients? People are surprised to hear it's given without sedation and without much restraint. It IS given very carefully with lots of safety precautions and protective gear for the team administrating the chemo. Here Twinkie is getting vinblastine for her metastatic MCT. Some chemo treatments are give more slowly or with fluids but this is called a bolus- given quickly, flush and done! She did great though she's not a fan of our treats! | Dr Sue Cancer Ve

🐶Let's talk mammary tumors and early detection. Mammary cancer (aka breast cancer) is one of the most common cancers we see in dogs. When Vivi's owner finds a mass along the mammary area in her dog, she does the right thing and brings her into Dr. Sue for an aspirate. 🔬 📹In my latest vlog, I talk all about mammary cancer, how age of spay affects this cancer, and early detection. This is what YOU can do at home to find this cancer earlier. 💙Early detection can save your pet's life!!! | Dr Sue

If your pet has cancer and you’ve been dealing with diarrhea management at home, you’ve been this person. You don't want to be this person, and you know how frustrating these moments can be! 😭 💩 Sometimes, it feels hopeless, and you feel bad that your pet is going through this. Although it's well-known that diarrhea is a potential side effect for dogs while receiving chemotherapy for their cancer, there wasn't an optimal treatment option for it until a couple of years ago. Early Detection Saves Pets' Lives! 🚨 I always say if your pet has a lump or bump that is the size of a pea and it has been present for a month, then it's time to have it aspirated by your vet. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ That's why I trademarked the phrase "Why wait, aspirate!®"! Early detection of cancer in pets can save their life. That's why it's so essential when you SEE something to DO something and not ignore the lump! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ After the cytology sample is taken from the mass, it's then evaluated under a

I cannot contain my excitement! We have a new treatment option for dogs with T-cell lymphoma. Inspired by advances in human cancer treatment, a new monoclonal antibody therapy is now approved and available to some oncologists - including me. Canine monoclonal antibody is an innovative treatment that's designed it to target and kill T-cell lymphomas. Bear's lymphoma is pretty resistant at this point and this new therapy is so welcome! Fingers and paws crossed for Bear. I love him so! | Dr Sue Can

Osteosarcoma is the most common primary canine bone cancer in dogs. 🦴 It's also locally aggressive and highly metastatic (likely to spread). Many times it's inherited through genetics though some other factors associated with osteosarcoma are: - Sex Hormones - Fractures - Metallic Implants - Chronic Osteomyelitis - Ionizing Radiation And interestedly, dogs' front limbs are two times more affected than their hind limbs. So one of the best ways to help treat this kind of cancer is to diagnose it

It’s not what you say; it’s how you say it. Regarding pet cancer, people want to know the stats, and if you don’t communicate it effectively, you’ll lose them because it’s scary and overwhelming. It’s not just breaking bad news to pet parents. It’s more than that; you want to make sure you empathize and can educate as much as possible to help them understand and process the diagnosis and treatment options. I speak to serve my audience, and my “Breaking Bad News” lecture is one of my favori

If your pet is receiving chemotherapy and has been a picky eater lately, this should be a good week for them! A little turkey white meat can be very convincing. 🦃 Many times, pets can get bored with their food, or some medications like chemotherapy can decrease their appetite, so in addition to turkey meat, here are some tips you can use to make their food more interesting again: 🍽 Heat their food in a microwave. 🍽 Add aroma to the plate by adding low-sodium chicken broth. 🍽 Specific

With my 20 years of being a veterinary oncologist, I have treated thousands of patients. 👀 Yes, I started when I was 10.... 😏 Through early detection and quick and effective treatment, we've been able to extend the quality of life of so many cats and dogs. Now, in a perfect world, we'd be able to snap our fingers and eliminate cancer, and my field would never even exist, but since cancer is common, I'm thankful that, along with other cancer specialists, we've spent our entire careers lea
