Garstin Island, also known as China Island, is a captivating and unique privately owned property. There you will find Herbert Garstin’s remarkable Oriental-style domicile which was built atop the towering boulders in 1911.

Inspired by my recent adventure that involved swimming in Big Bear Lake, right next to this interesting island, I collected some old photos from the internet and put them together. It is called China Island, Treasure Island and Garstin Island.

Treasure Island/Garstin Island is a celebrated swimming destination in Big Bear Lake. Visitors can access a small shoreline path leading to the waters and enjoy the thrill of swimming near the iconic boulders.

May 10, 2019 · Originally named Garstin Island, this iconic landmark is also known as Treasure Island or China Island. Built by Herbert & Maude Garstin in 1911, the style of the home was likely influenced by trips the Garstins made to China.

China Island in Big Bear Lake is known to be one of the best places for swimming in the area. The coast is very rocky, so it’s not like the sandy beaches you may be used to. However, tons of people come here during great weather to jump off the enormous boulders and enjoy the water!

On the far western part of Big Bear Lake, there’s an island made of granite boulders named Garstin Island. It is colloquially called China Island (and Treasure Island) because it has several “Chinese” huts built right into the granite that were used by the Chinese that helped build the Big Bear Dam over 100 years ago.
