It is interesting to note that the distant area residents most often failed to recognize the boom and wondered if it was a storm or explosion. So if the sound you heard sounded like an airplane, it probably wasn't a sonic boom.

Jan 8, 2017 · Ex US Navy pilot here. I flew the S-3 Viking, which refueled via the probe/drogue method, as opposed to the USAF flying boom method. I can confirm that the receiving plane is below the wake turbulence of the tanker, maybe by 8–10 feet. Although, even if you should ride up into the wake, the sensation is perhaps not as violent as you might think.

Assuming the aircraft you saw was traveling in a straight line, then the sonic boom you heard (assuming it was a sonic boom) could not have been generated from that same aircraft. This is because the sonic boom is experienced at an angle back from the flight path of the aircraft.
