BEIJING, March 24 - Chinese President Xi Jinping made a rare visit to the ambitious Xiongan project still under construction near Beijing, calling on officials to "throw themselves" into completing a task on which he has staked his name and legacy.
Official documents and state media have highlighted Xi’s personal role in planning, making decisions and advancing the Xiongan New Area in Hebei.
President Trump warned that he could postpone a meeting set to begin in just over two weeks if China refuses to help reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
Donald Trump threatened to delay his summit with Xi Jinping if Beijing doesn’t help secure the Strait of Hormuz, as the US-Israel war stifles oil supplies and unsettles ties between the world’s biggest economies.
The Xi Jinping-led China government had also increased fuel prices on March 9. At that time, petrol prices were raised by 695 yuan per ton, while diesel prices were increased by 670 yuan per ton.
Trump’s agenda for the high-stakes meeting remains unclear to Beijing, Chinese analysts say, while American executives say they haven’t been invited along.
China has no reason to help the US in the Strait of Hormuz — and every incentive to wait out this crisis.
