Heavy smoke drifting east of Apple Valley had residents wondering about a possible fire in the San Bernardino Mountains.

The fire broke out about 1:35 p.m. Tuesday in the area of Bowden Ranch Road and Coxey Truck Road, just south of Apple Valley.
