President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin are scheduled to meet Friday at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska, to discuss the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

The US president will meet his Ukrainian counterpart in Washington on Monday in the wake of his Alaska summit with Vladimir Putin on Friday.

President Donald Trump has failed to secure an agreement from Vladimir Putin to end Russia’s war in Ukraine, falling short in his most significant move yet to stop the bloodshed, even after rolling out the red carpet for the man who started it.

The problem is that they have no strategy of their own for ending the Ukraine war, other than hoping to contain Russia over the longer term.

Russia and Ukraine continued to exchange long-range drone and missile strikes on the eve of the summit. Ukraine’s military said on Friday morning that it had hit several targets inside Russia, including an oil refinery and a port that Moscow uses to import military supplies from Iran.

Ukraine's Air Force has reported that Russian forces launched an Iskander-M ballistic missile and 60 drones on the night of 16-17 August. Ukrainian air defence units have destroyed or jammed 40 of them.
