Arne Slot says Joe Gomez might need surgery on his hamstring with the Liverpool defender expected to be sidelined until the latter stages of the season. The 27-year-old centre-back limped out of the FA Cup tie against Plymouth Argyle earlier this month – just 11 minutes into his comeback after six weeks out.

Joe Gomez missed the whole of January with a hamstring injury suffered against West Ham in Liverpool’s final fixture of 2024, returning to action with a start last weekend against Championship strugglers Plymouth in the FA Cup. However, he lasted just 10 minutes of the fourth round tie at Home Park before going down and needing to be replaced.

Liverpool are without in-form forward Cody Gakpo for Sunday’s Premier League game against Wolves at Anfield. The Dutch international has enjoyed a successful second season at the club and is enjoying a good run of form with four goals and an assist in his last six appearances.

Gakpo missed Wednesday’s 2-2 draw with Aston Villa due to the knock he sustained in the Merseyside derby at Everton last week. Speaking ahead of Sunday’s trip to the Etihad, Arne Slot said on Thursday that Gakpo is still not back in full training and it will be a “close call” whether he is ready to face City.
