A Louisiana resident has died after being hospitalized with bird flu in December of last year, marking the first known U.S.

The patient in Louisiana was older than 65 and was reported to have had underlying medical conditions, health officials said.

The virus has affected 344,100 birds in the last month at Michigan commercial farms on the west side of the state.
