Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds is ordering flags across the state to be raised from half staff to full on Monday for the presidential inauguration of Donald Trump. Flags across the country have flown at half staff since President Jimmy Carter's death on December 29.

DES MOINES — Flags at the Iowa Capitol will fly full-staff Jan. 20 for President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration, then return to half-staff to continue the remembrance of President Jimmy Carter, under an order issued Tuesday by Gov. Kim Reynolds.

At least 30 governors ordered flags to be flown at full-staff on Inauguration Day, raising flags before the end of the mourning period for Jimmy Carter.

The controversial decision pauses a 30-day flag-lowering order following the death of former President Jimmy Carter.

"On January 20th, the flags at the Capitol will fly at full-staff to celebrate our country coming together behind the inauguration of our 47th President, Donald Trump," Johnson said in a statement. "The flags will be lowered back to half-staff the following day to continue honoring President Jimmy Carter.”

President-elect Donald Trump in a social media post claimed without evidence that Democrats were “giddy” about flags being at half-staff for his inauguration.

In the White House press release, the president ordered that flags be returned to half-staff in honor of the late President Carter.

Trump’s move to raise the flags was unusual and went against the customs honoring recently deceased former presidents.
