Democrat Mike Zimmer has defeated Republican Kate Whittington in the special election for Senate District 35, which was vacated by Chris Cournoyer.

CLINTON COUNTY, Iowa — Democrat Mike Zimmer has been named the winner of Iowa's 35th Senate District special election. Zimmer faced off with Republican Katie Whittington to replace Republican Chris Cournoyer, who previously represented the district. She resigned after being tapped to serve as Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds' new lieutenant governor.

Unofficial results as of 9:40 p.m. with all counties and precincts reporting, show Zimmer leading with 4,812, or 51.72%, to Whittington's 4,473 votes, or 48.08%.
