NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center has expanded a Level 3 out of 5 (or enhanced) risk for severe weather for most of north and part of central Alabama tonight (areas in orange in the map at the top of this post). A large part of south, central and east Alabama will also have a Level 3 risk on Monday.

Widespread storms are expected to sweep through a region stretching from Texas to Michigan on Sunday. Some of the most severe weather is expected in the Ohio and Tennessee River Valleys, where forecasters said the conditions are right for “very large hail, damaging winds and strong tornadoes.”

A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect through late this evening as thunderstorms move across south-central and southeast Lower Michigan.

On the north side of this strong storm system, wintry precipitation continues to plague parts of the Upper Midwest, Great Lakes and New England. Winter alerts remain in effect for 9 million people, including in Green Bay, Wisconsin; Marquette, Michigan; Burlington, Vermont; and Portland, Maine.

Southern Lower Michigan could see thunderstorms Sunday afternoon through evening. Risks include large hail, damaging winds, and isolated tornadoes, particularly in southwest Michigan Sunday evening. Southeast Michigan faces a slight risk of severe weather Sunday,

FIRST ALERT: Storms later tonight through Monday morning. Damaging winds are possible (midnight through 4 a.m.) and tornado risk. That line will move toward our region through the late evening and, if it holds together, could bring us a quick-moving shot of strong to severe storms right around midnight.
