“Sustained lava fountains approximately 50–100 feet (15–30 meters) in height are currently erupting from the north vent,” the US Geological Services Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said in a statement, adding that “fountain heights are increasing rapidly.”
In Alaska, a federal grant that funded seismic data collection in order to warn people about tsunamis is being cancelled. Experts say cuts like this could make tsunami warnings less reliable.
There is no threat of tsunami after a magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck southeast Alaska today, officials said. The quake struck at 10:41 a.m. Hawaii time and was centered about 56 miles north of Yakutat, Alaska (population 662), and about 154 miles west of White Horse, Canada, at a depth of about 6 miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
