In fiscal year 2023, Tesla’s Giga Texas factory used about 128 million gallons of Austin city water. By fiscal year 2025, that number had ballooned to more than 544 million gallons, a fourfold increase that made the electric vehicle plant one of Austin Water’s single largest customers.

Tesla’s Giga Texas water use rose nearly 60% in 2 years, records show
Tesla’s sprawling Gigafactory in southeast Travis County used roughly 60 percent more treated water in Austin’s fiscal year 2025 than it did just two years earlier, according to billing records that Austin Water presented to the City Council in March 2026.
The acquisition comes after Tesla said new spending will go toward AI-related initiatives involving its robotaxi service and its Optimus humanoid.
