Flight delays and cancellations escalated over the weekend, with real-time flight tracking data confirming over 8,000 delays across the United States on Sunday, which was up from approximately 5,300 the previous day. Up-to-date flight information can be found in this real-time flight tracker.

“Generally, if your flight is delayed or canceled, the airline will give you the option for an alternative flight or they’ll try to book you on a different flight or potentially with a different airline,” said AAA Northeast Senior Spokesperson Mark Schieldrop.

Portland International Airport’s flight tracker showed 17 canceled Alaska arrivals and seven canceled departures as of 6:30 a.m. Friday, as well as dozens of delayed flights. Alaska Airlines said it is working on getting travelers affected by the disruption to their destinations.

Flight delays are likely as the U.S. government shutdown means no paycheck for around 13,000 air traffic controllers and about 50,000 Transportation Security Administration officers.

Alaska Airlines warned more flight disruptions were possible Oct. 24 following an IT outage that led to hundreds of flight cancellations.

Flights to DFW International Airport are delayed about 18 minutes, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

Flights inbound to Austin from all over the U.S. were delayed by 39 minutes on average, with some flights waiting at their origin airports for up to an hour and a half.
