The version I've used since the 70s is a new version the NIV Bible. It really tries to communicate, which does not require an exact word for word translation. And it makes use of many authors and scholars.

Some have the ESV study bible for study purposes, which is okay, as well as the LCMS NIV Study Bible (1986), but not the ESV for public worship.

WEBJan 12, 2022 — I have not read the 2011 Bible yet, but the 1984 NIV was supposed to avoid bias. CE is the Catholic Edition, with the complete number of books. RSV and ESV have that option, and any specifically Catholic or Orthodox Bible will also be complete. The original KJV was also complete, but that changed a long long time ago.

I think it is the preference of most Churches which differs, at one Baptist Church I went to used the NLT as their pew Bible, another either used KJV or NIV (can't remember), and yet another I have yet to figure out what translation they use (different pastors read out of different translations).
